Weidmüller's "RockStar® HighPower 250 A" – one to four-pole high current connectors with crimp connection technology for 250 A and up to 4000 V. – Newly developed bulkhead housing with rapid assembly frame. – Modular design across the whole

Weidmüller has now extended its established family of "RockStar® HighPower connectors" with the new high current connector "RockStar® HighPower 250 A" equipped with crimp connection technology for 250 A and up to 4000 V. The new high current connectors are based on a modular design, just the same as the well-known "RockStar® HighPower" 550 A version. The use of one to four-pole modules ensures users always obtain the right connector to fulfil their respective application requirements. The space-saving, 250 A rated power contacts are easily assembled to create a variety of different vibration-proof versions: one connector with four power contacts or with three power contacts and a PE contact or with two power contacts or as the most compact version with a single power contact. The two-piece, size 8 die cast aluminium housing comprising hood, base and bulkhead designs is equipped with a large surface area PE connection; the same applies to the mating frame. The highly impact resistant and corrosion resistant housings are easily assembled and are rated to degree of protection IP68 and IP69k. Assembly of the newly developed bulkhead housing is supported by a rapid assembly mating frame complete with pre-assembled fastening screws. Weidmüller has redesigned the crimp contacts of the "RockStar® HighPower 250 A" so that they can now be dismantled via the M25 cable entry bore. Multi-core, flexible and finely stranded copper conductors from 25 to 95 mm2 are easily terminated using standard crimping tools. No special tools are needed. Thanks to the interior EMC connection, which can be adapted to the respective cable diameter, the "RockStar"®HighPower 250 A" has excellent EMC characteristics. The wide temperature range of -50 °C to +120 °C and housing impact resistance up to 7 joules ensures users are able to deploy the new high current connectors in extreme environments without reservation.

Weidmüller's RockStar® HighPower 250 A – one to four-pole high current connectors with crimp connection technology for 250 A and up to 4000 V. – Newly developed bulkhead housing with rapid assembly frame. – Modular design across the whole system facilitates a large number of different connectors.
Utilizing connectors from the "RockStar® HighPower product line proves best practice in various high current applications in mechanical and systems engineering, process automation, transportation engineering and wind turbine generators. The innovative range of high current connectors designed to implement pluggable power transmission presently consists of the modular connector system "RockStar"® HighPower 550 A" and the "RockStar® HighPower 250 A". "RockStar® HighPower" was originally developed for high current applications in, amongst others, transportation engineering in accordance with DIN EN 61373 CAT 2 – Bogie. It is designed for use in engine control, eddy-current brake and carriage-to-carriage junction applications. In addition, the connector simplifies the process of replacing the complete bogie.

Weidmüller is extending the "RockStar® HighPower" family with the introduction of the new high current connector "RockStar® HighPower 250 A" with crimp connection technology for 250 A and 4000 V. Designed and developed to meet the needs of different fields of applications with a wide variety of combination options the fully comprehensive system represents the ideal basis to seamlessly create pluggable solutions to carry high currents and voltages. The robust and compactly implemented connector reliably houses four power contacts in a space-saving format. Rated data: max. 250 A and 4000 V. The two-piece die cast aluminium housing comprising hood, base and bulkhead versions corresponds to size 8. A rapid assembly mating frame with pre-assembled fastening screws was developed for the new bulkhead housing. All housings are equipped with a large surface PE connection; the same applies to the mating frame.

The seamless modular design of the entire system makes it possible to create numerous application-specific connector versions: a version with four power contacts or with three power contacts and a PE contact or with two power contacts or as the most compact version with a single power contact. The robust housings correspond to protection class IP68 (IEC 60529) and IP69k (DIN 40050 Part 9, Water). The operating temperature range is -50° to +120 °C. The innovative high current connectors are based on a two-piece, highly impact resistant to 7 joule and corrosion resistant die cast aluminium housing. These values ensure the connector is eminently suitable for deployment in extreme environments. The housing surface is powder-coated black (RAL 9005).

In contrast to other manufacturers Weidmüller favours the field-proven, maintenance-free crimp connection technology. The crimp contact was given a fresh design for the new high current connector "RockStar® HighPower 250 A", so that it can now be dismantled via the respective M25 cable entry bore. Multi-core, flexible and finely stranded copper conductors from 25 mm2, 35 mm2, 50 mm2, 70 mm2 to 95 mm2 are easily terminated using commercially available crimping tools. Weidmüller's own manual crimping tools of the types 'MTR 160' or 'MTR 300' are best practice choice. No special tools are needed.

The crimp contacts are made of a high quality, silver-plated copper alloy. Reliable and interference-free conductance of high currents and voltages are a distinguishing feature of these contacts. Optional touch protection can also be ordered for the socket insert.

The crimp contacts can be reliably inserted into an Insulation sleeve, which is then secured by a retaining spring. The insulation sleeve is made from the high-quality insulating material PA 66, which is both UL listed and railway standards compliant. Size 8 high current "RockStar® HighPower 250 A" connectors are assembled utilizing "individual contact techniques" and can be fitted with maximum four contacts, which are then held together in a frame along with the insulation sleeve. Constructional design features make it impossible to inadvertently release the contacts from the retaining frame.

The "RockStar® HighPower 250 A" system has excellent EMC characteristics. For this purpose the system is equipped with large surface PE connections, which are located on the hood, base and on the bulkhead housings as well as the mating frame. The internal EMC connection utilizing precision shield levers, which are adapted to the respective cable diameter, makes a significant contribution towards achieving the very good EMC characteristics.

All materials utilised in the inserts and housings are free from contaminants. When selecting the materials Weidmüller placed prime importance on compliance with existing and planned international guidelines pertaining to harmful substances. The plastic materials used in the inserts successfully fulfil criteria for international railway industry approvals such as DIN EN 5510 Part 2, NFF 16-101, NFF 16-102, ASTM E 162, ASTM E 662 and Bombardier SMP 800C.
